Open Door to Fall – Behind the Illustration

open door to fall surreal illustration of a horse and a woman in minimalistic landscape by monica lind

Open Door to Fall

There are moments when a season seems to shift all at once, quietly and without warning. As if the world pauses to breathe. Open Door to Fall was born from that kind of moment. Like a threshold where something familiar and something unknown meet.

In this illustration, a woman in a flowing patterned dress stands face to face with a dark horse. Their silhouettes held in a calm, open landscape. Behind her, a door opens into autumn. Bright leaves drifting, a single tree glowing with seasonal color. The scene carries a subtle tension, as if both characters sense that something is about to change.

I wanted to explore the idea of transition, the instant between two states of being. The woman stands in the wind, her scarf and coat moving around her, while the horse remains steady and grounded. Together, they form a quiet dialogue between motion and stillness, certainty and curiosity, the present moment and what lies ahead.

Nature plays an important role in this composition. The open landscape is intentionally minimal, almost dreamlike, inviting the viewer to imagine the space beyond the frame. The door becomes both a literal and symbolic element. Like a passage into autumn, but also an invitation to step into a different emotional or creative space.

As with many of my works, Open Door to Fall blends fashion-inspired forms, poetic storytelling and a touch of surrealism. My goal was to create a scene that feels both elegant and mysterious. Something that stays with you, not because of what is happening, but because of what might happen next.

This artwork is now available as an exclusive limited edition art print, carefully produced on museum-quality archival paper. It is meant to be lived with. A piece that brings a sense of calm, imagination and seasonal atmosphere into any home or creative space.

Open Door to Fall is a reminder that every season, whether literal or symbolic, begins with an open door. All we need to do is step through.
